Mission Statement
The Rutgers-Newark Department of Psychological and Counseling Services
(Psy A CS) values every student member of the Rutgers-Newark
community and is here to help maximize their educational experience.
Our belief is that in addition to classroom instruction, the educational
process optimally involves the development of the student as a whole
person. The goal of PsyACS is to enhance the student's overall educational
experience by facilitating their personal , academic and professional
growth.
The PsyACS staff understands that the individual's psychological adjustment
is related to their emotional, physical, spiritual and social well-being.
Students may face a variety of personal challenges during their studies
at the University which may have the capacity to impact one or several
of these areas. The ways in which students respond to such challenges
can significantly impact their ability to develop and maintain a healthy
and rewarding life. Decisions made when students are feeling stressed,
confused or in the midst of a crisis can either help or impede the student's
ability to achieve his or her individual goals. The PsyACS staff therefore
seek to empower students by offering important information and tools
which students may choose to apply to their particular challenges to
facilitate their healthy growth and development.
At PsyACS, we offer a wide variety of counseling and psychological services
designed to encourage student's development of time management, assertiveness
and effective problem solving skills; to assist in the resolution of
personal issues that may otherwise detract from academic and career successes,
as well as to enhance the student's ability to develop healthy and satisfying
interpersonal relationships. These services are designed to support,
encourage and empower students as they strive to adjust to transitions
and meet the challenges of their evolving lives. We believe that given
the opportunity as well as the appropriate tools, most individuals will
make positive choices and changes necessary to promote healthy growth
and personal development.
In addition to providing support for a variety of challenging issues
that might benefit from our professional assistance, PsyACS also provides
referrals to medical, psychiatric, academic and other appropriate community
resources to enhance each student's growth and well being. We also support
the University's diversity initiative and provide mutual respect and
understanding for the diverse student populations that comprise our campus
community.
