Welcome to the Rutgers-Newark Department of Psychological and Counseling Services (Psy A CS) Website.

Psy A CS offers Rutgers-Newark Students short-term individual counseling, group counseling, workshops, and referrals to additional resources. All services are free of charge and confidential.

Psychological and Counseling Services is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For emergencies after hours or on weekends call the Psychiatric Emergency room of the University of Medicine and Dentistry at: (973) 972-6135 or your local hospital emergency room.

You may be wondering about what kind of problem is appropriate to discuss with a Psy A CS counselor? Anything that troubles you. Here is a list of some of the concerns that students tend to bring up in counseling:

  • Depression
  • Death and loss issues
  • Low self-esteem
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Alcohol or drugs
  • Academic anxieties
  • Roommate and friendship problems
  • Dating relationship problems or breakup
  • Family problems
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Sexual concerns
  • Identity concerns
  • Traumatic experiences such as sexual assault, armed robbery
  • Homesickness
